The Garrett Vortex VX5 can be upgraded at any time through a software update to a more advanced Vortex version, the VX7 or VX9. The Vortex is the first metal detector series in the world to make this possible. You can start as a beginner with the VX5 and, after gaining experience, upgrade to the VX7 or VX9 with more features and options without having to buy an entirely new detector.
The VX5 metal detector has all the settings and functions you could want as a beginner. You can choose from two search frequency options: the single frequency of 13 KHz and the multi-frequency, which allows you to search with multiple frequencies simultaneously. To ignore unwanted minerals in the ground, you can perform a ground balance. Unwanted metals such as nails can be excluded from the search process using the discrimination/notch function. The VX5 features numeric target identification (1-99) and a bar at the top of the display where you can see which target category the object falls into. The VX7 gives you access to even more settings: It offers two single frequencies (5 and 13 KHz) and two multi-frequency programs (multi and multi-salt). To achieve more depth, the response time can be adjusted in two steps. To differentiate between iron and precious metals, the VX7 has two target identification bars, with iron displayed on the lower bar and precious metals on the upper bar. Unlike the VX5, the VX7 offers five audio tones instead of three. Additionally, you have the option to pair an MS-3 Z-Lynk wireless headphone. With the extra "Beach" search mode, the Vortex becomes an even better choice for searching on wet saltwater beaches and in salt water.
The VX9 offers, in addition to the two multi-frequency programs (Multi and Multi-Salt), access to five different individual frequencies (5, 9, 13, 18, and 25 KHz). For even more precise target identification, you now have access to three different identification bars, where the lower bar displays clear iron signals, the middle bar shows precious metals, and the upper bar shows objects that cannot be clearly identified. The response time can be adjusted more precisely in three steps to improve search depth or speed up the response time. The Garrett Vortex VX9 also offers the search modes "Thin Coins" for searching very thin coins and the "Fast" mode, giving it a total of seven different search modes.
For all-around searching for coins and jewelry, the 13 KHz individual search frequency of the Vortex is the most suitable. The VX7 and VX9 offer additional individual search frequencies and multi-frequency options. It's important to understand that for large objects at great depths, a low search frequency like 5 KHz is recommended, while for searching for very small fine jewelry in the upper layer, a high search frequency of 20+ KHz is advisable. However, each Vortex version can also be set to simultaneous multi-frequency, where it searches at multiple frequencies (from 5 to 25 KHz) simultaneously!
